Icarus was treated rather poorly by his father, and hasn’t quite gotten over that. It’s affected the way he sees the world, and he has a terribly difficult time trusting other’s because of that. His father has basically drilled it into his head that he will, at some point, lose everything he ever strives for (hence why he was named Icarus), so buried deep down is this kind of messed up feeling that he’s just going to fail. He wants to fight his father to the death, because of what he was put through as a pup, the poor kid. Nothing is more important to him than his best friend, and, because he’s paranoid that he’s going to lose all things important to him, he’s severely protective and territorial of him.
